Key facts
ProtectionClassé MH

About
A quadrangular Renaissance château surrounded by moats, the château de Chamerolles was built around 1520 on the site of a medieval stronghold, at the edge of the Orléans forest. Brick and Beauce stone create a decor typical of the Loire Valley.
The château was built around 1520 by Lancelot Ier du Lac. It passed through several families, including that of Jacques Saumery, brother-in-law of Colbert. Acquired by the City of Paris in 1976, it has belonged to the Loiret department since 1987.
Built on a quadrangular plan, the château is flanked by cylindrical towers. Its chapel preserves rare 16th century Protestant texts painted on the walls.
Listed as a historic monument in 1927, the château has been open to the public since 1992. Its south wing houses a perfume museum, and its Renaissance gardens were recreated during restoration.
