Château de Freÿr
Key facts
About
The château de Freÿr spreads its Renaissance quadrangle and terraced gardens along the banks of the Meuse, in Namur province, in southern Belgium (Wallonia). Held for centuries by the same family line, it is one of the jewels of Walloon heritage.
A medieval fortress, destroyed in 1554, stood on the site before the current château, begun in 1571 in the Renaissance style and expanded into a quadrangle in 1637. The Beaufort-Spontin family has owned it for generations. In 1675, the Treaty of Freÿr, a commercial agreement between France and Spain, was signed there, and Louis XIV stayed at the château during the siege of Dinant.
The terraced gardens, laid out in the 1760s in the style of Le Nôtre, are considered the purest example of a French garden preserved in Wallonia. Visitors can admire orange trees more than three hundred fifty years old and a rococo pavilion.
Listed as a historic monument in 1956 and recognized as an exceptional heritage property in 2016, the château is open to visitors along with its gardens.
