Château du Sailhant
Key facts
ProtectionInscrit MH
Inscrit monument historique: the second level of heritage protection in France, decided by the regional prefect. Owners must notify the state before any work on the protected parts, and the regional heritage authority (the DRAC) reviews it.
About
On a triangular basalt spur about twenty meters high, the Château du Sailhant watches over the upper Auvergne. A 13th-century fortress, it stands not far from the Sailhant waterfall, a source of legends.
In the 13th century, the château belonged to the Sailhans family, before passing into English hands during the Hundred Years' War. Today it is owned by Joseph Pell Lombardi, an American architect.
The north facade features four round towers; a keep defends the south side, flanked by smaller towers to the east and west. The château retains old frescoes, a staircase carved into the rock, and a chapel dedicated to Saint Ferval.
Listed as a historic monument in 2019, the château, whose last restoration was completed in 2004, is no longer open to visitors.
