Félix Duban
1798-1870
ArchitectHistorical Figure
A leading figure of romantic architecture, Félix Duban combined original design with scholarly restoration work. Winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1823, he returned from Italy deeply influenced by the ancient polychromy discovered at Pompeii.
Appointed in 1832, he designed the Palais des Études and most of the buildings of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, a project he continued until his death.
A respected restorer, he worked on the château de Blois starting in 1845, on the Galerie d'Apollon at the Louvre, and, alongside Lassus and Viollet-le-Duc, on the Sainte-Chapelle.
