Jean Bullant

1515-1578

ArchitectHistorical Figure

Jean Bullant, the favored architect of Constable Anne de Montmorency, put classical order at the service of the most powerful figures of his time. Born around 1515 in Amiens, in northern France, he drew up the plans for the château d'Écouen for his patron, his most famous work.

For the same Montmorency, he built the Petit Château de Chantilly, an elegant residence that still stands at the heart of the estate. Henri II named him controller of the crown's buildings in 1557.

Starting in 1570, he entered the service of Catherine de Médicis, for whom he completed the gallery over the Cher at Chenonceau and built the Hôtel de la Reine, of which only the Médicis column has survived.
