Robert de Cotte
1656-1735
ArchitectHistorical Figure
Robert de Cotte succeeded Jules Hardouin-Mansart as First Architect to the King in 1708, carrying forward Louis XIV's grand style into a lighter manner that anticipated the Régence period.
At Versailles, he completed the royal chapel begun by Mansart (1710) and finished the work on the Grand Trianon. Trained within the Bâtiments du roi, the royal works administration, he also directed the Académie royale d'architecture.
His Palais Rohan in Strasbourg, in northeastern France, along with his Parisian townhouses and his projects for the Schönborn family in Bonn and Wurtzbourg, carried French classicism to the baroque courts of Germany.
