Salomon de Brosse
1571-1626
ArchitectHistorical Figure
The grandson of Jacques Androuet du Cerceau, Salomon de Brosse inherited a dynasty of architects and became the architect to Queen Marie de Médicis in 1614.
Starting in 1615, he drew up the plans for the Palais du Luxembourg on her behalf, inspired by the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. He also designed the facade of the parlement de Bretagne in Rennes, a town in Brittany (1618), and the château de Coulommiers.
His work, still marked by Mannerism, foreshadowed the rigor of classicism that would later be carried forward by François Mansart and Louis Le Vau.
