Eugène Lefèvre-Pontalis
1862-1923
Historical Figure
A specialist in medieval architecture, Eugène Lefèvre-Pontalis traveled across France studying its religious monuments, which he described and photographed on site.
As director of the Société française d'archéologie from 1900 onward, he turned it into a leading institution and elevated the Bulletin monumental into the field's most respected scholarly journal.
His thesis on the religious architecture of the former diocese of Soissons, a town in northern France, focused on the origins of the ribbed vault and remains a foundational study of Gothic art.
