Pierre de Nolhac
1859-1936
Historical Figure
He revived the Versailles museum. A historian and poet, Pierre de Nolhac served as its curator from 1892 to 1920, transforming an aging storehouse into a great museum of history.
A specialist in the Renaissance and Italian humanism, he rebuilt the château's collections and brought back some of the furnishings scattered during the Revolution.
Elected to the Académie française in 1922, he had, as a young fellow at the École française de Rome, discovered previously unknown manuscripts by Petrarch in the Vatican.
